Coding for Kids

“Mum, I have created an app which can help kids to learn alphabets and basic Math”… said Miraya; my ten-year-old daughter

She has been studying to code online for the past few years now. She loves coding and creating new things. It has been a very exciting experience for her.It is really a great achievement for a 10-year-old to create something new. Computer science has become an essential part of our lives. Our life revolves around technology.

At this stage, I have no idea if my daughter would choose to work in the field of computer science once she joins the workforce or not. But one thing I am pretty sure of is that kids have to understand the significance of computer technology and how computer programs work. Learning to use coding helps in developing logical thinking and creative learning skills.

What is Coding?

In order to develop a program to perform a particular task requires coding. In simple language, coding is a set of instructions that help the programmer to achieve the desired features and functions in a program.

Programming is used to develop software, games, and applications. Through coding our go-to gadgets are programmed to work, which help us in our everyday life.We use different programming languages for different computer programs. Just like us, computers understand certain languages like HTML, JavaScript, C, and Python.

Fundamentally the computer language converts human-generated instructions into binary code – that is, strings of ones and zeroes that inform a computer what to do. When learning to code, kids in general, study to use simplified, visual programming tools that allow them to create programs with pre-made blocks of codes which can be stacked together to form a sequence of instructions.

Kids will then typically move on to studying to program with text-based programming languages that use words, abbreviations, numbers, and symbols to create the instructions. To study code kids need to also comprehend how computers work by developing computational thinking.

Coding involves a logical thought process to solve a problem. Coding requires the ability to identify the problem and troubleshoot mistakes when a program does not perform as you expected it to. The computer only works properly as far as they get the right kind of instructions. Therefore it is crucial to write correct programs.

Why Teach Kids to Code?

Coding teaches kids that finding a solution to a problem often involves a logical sequence of steps or actions. It helps to develop problem-solving skills such as perseverance, trial and error, and understanding of cause and effect, analytical thinking and reasoning skills, as well as math and language skills. It also challenges children to think creatively and to pursue innovative ideas and solutions. At the end of the day, kids think coding is fun and I love that it really works their brains!
And if my kids are going to be engaged on a screen, I would rather they be using it to create something rather than passive entertainment. Each and every app, game, and software program, we need a coded program to work. Many of our domestic appliances and our cars need a coded program to work.
“Coding teaches you how to think.” – stated by Steve Jobs. So, learn how to code and think wisely.
